Halloween is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31st October. Typical festive Halloween activities include trick or treat, attending costume parties, decorating the house with scary decoration like spiders, skeleton etc., pumpkins carving and of course making some Halloween treat.

Trick or treating is a customary practice for children on Halloween. Children in costumes will go from house to house in order to ask for a treats such as candy or chocolate with the phrase "Trick or Treat"!

Even though this custom trick or treating is not very popular in Malaysia but I have baked some Halloween theme cookies, Monster Finger Cookies!

Note: This recipe contains nuts, so they are not to be eaten by those who are allergic to nuts!

The recipe adapted with minor changes from Beanpanda
Ingredients:
  • 100 g Unsalted butter, cut into cubes and soften at room temperature
  • 70 g Castor sugar
  • 20 g Egg, whisked
  • 180 g Cake flour or low protein flour
  • 40 g Almond flour
  • 20 -24 Whole almonds or sliced almonds
  • 1 tsp Lemon zest (optional)

Note 2: Substitution for Cake Flour - 1 cup of all purpose flour or plain flour, remove 2 tbsp of plain flour and replace with 2 tbsp of cornstarch

Method:
  • Mix butter and sugar until soften and combined.

  • Add in whisk egg and mix until combined.
  • Then add in flour, almond flour and lemon zest. Mix well to form a soft dough.

  • Shape dough into loaf.
  • Cut the dough into half.
  • Slice each dough into 12 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into finger shape and squeeze the dough in around the center to create a knuckle shape. Then using a knife, make indents in several places to resemble the wrinkles in finger.

I have decorated some of my monster fingers with some "blood"! (1 Tbsp of icing sugar with a few drops of milk to reach the right consistency. Then add red food colouring)

Baked another batch on the day and decorated them with cocoa powder and used half almond instead of the whole nut.
